That house belonged to Foster Fyans. Fyans employed an Aboriginal leader called Balliang or Ballyang. This leader’s name became the name of this very place. Balliang sits north of Geelong about 54 kilometres from Melbourne. The area’s identity is deeply rooted in its agricultural past. The Staughton Vale Estate a significant pastoral landmark significantly shaped Balliang’s early development. Simon Staughton a pioneer pastoralist established runs in the district way back in 1842. His influence is still felt today.

This unassuming hamlet boasts a rich past. A post office opened in 1910 serving the community for many years. It closed in 1968 as many small post offices did. The community though was more than just a post office. Schools churches and community halls helped build the community. A school opened in 1910 followed by another in 1913. A church arrived in 1912. A public hall was constructed in 1918. These structures were the heart of life here in Balliang. They show the close-knit nature of its community.

Balliang’s story isn’t just about buildings. The people who built Balliang made it what it is today. In 1911 a small 66 people called Balliang home. That number grew over the years. By 1921 it had increased significantly to 224. Even through the changes of times Balliang has remained resilient.

The 2016 census recorded 290 people residing in Balliang. The community is a mix of people. The majority were born in Australia. A sizeable portion identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The ancestry is quite varied. English Australian and Irish backgrounds are prominent. Interestingly a small number speak Maltese at home. This reflects the diverse background of the people of Balliang.

Today Balliang’s population stands at 254. The community continues to evolve yet retains its unique charm. The history of Balliang a testament to resilience is embedded in the land itself.
