Clissold Road a familiar name for many. But do you know its secrets? Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form stands proudly on this very road. Its history is woven into the fabric of this London neighbourhood.

Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form wasn’t always what you see today. It was born in 1982. The school was created by merging Clissold Park Secondary Modern School and Woodberry Down School. The new school found its home in the old Clissold Park building.

In 2002 the school gained a Media Arts specialism. A second specialism in science followed in 2005. The school proudly called itself Media Arts & Science College. This specialism ended in 2011. The school continues to flourish. Its current Head Teacher Zehra Jaffer took the reins in 2018.

The school earned high praise. In a 2007 Ofsted report Stoke Newington School was described as an outstanding school. Its leadership and management were praised for ensuring every student excelled. The school’s sixth form opened in September 2006.

A major renovation took place between 2006 and 2010. This was part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. Willmott Dixon was the main contractor. Jestico + Whiles designed the renovation. They won a RIBA award for their work.

The school is known for its commitment to inclusivity. It’s renowned for its anti-homophobia drive. Music teacher Elly Barnes was even recognized in The Independent’s Pink List LGBT awards. Stoke Newington School champions behaviour mentors. These mentors work to reduce bullying and discrimination.

Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form boasts a remarkable list of alumni. From Sid Vicious the iconic Sex Pistols bassist to Labrinth the multi-talented singer songwriter rapper and record producer. The school’s legacy extends to actress Saffron Burrows. Actor Adam Deacon artist Juno Calypso and racing cyclist Tao Geoghegan Hart also call the school their alma mater. Professor Green singer Stephen Paul Manderson Olympian boxer Lawrence Okolie baker and TV personality Liam Charles footballer Sean Clare footballer Lotte Wubben-Moy and boxer Maurice Hope are alumni as well.
