Stepping inside BookPeople, you might feel a little overwhelmed. It’s not just a bookstore. It’s a literary landmark. It’s Texas-sized, after all. BookPeople has been an Austin institution since 1970. It has seen Austin grow and change. It has witnessed the rise and fall of literary trends. But one thing has remained constant: BookPeople’s dedication to the written word. This isn’t just any bookstore; this is the largest independent bookstore in Texas, a title it wears with pride.

BookPeople has called Austin home for over five decades. It began life under a different name, Grok Books, a nod to Robert A. Heinlein’s *Stranger in a Strange Land*. The original Grok Books was a haven for book lovers, a place to explore ideas and connect with fellow readers. It nurtured a community. It offered a curated selection of books, emphasizing radical politics and small press publications. In 1984, Philip Sansone took the reins. He renamed it BookPeople, inspired by Ray Bradbury’s *Fahrenheit 451*, where “book people” memorized books to save them from destruction. The name change coincided with a move to Brodie Oaks Shopping Center. BookPeople transformed into the largest bookstore in Austin at the time.

The store continued to grow, eventually landing at its current location on Sixth and Lamar in 1995. Here, BookPeople blossomed, expanding to three floors and boasting over 300,000 titles. It became a literary hub, hosting author talks and fostering a vibrant community. However, the rise of chain bookstores and online retailers forced BookPeople to adapt. It downsized, focusing on a curated selection of approximately 180,000 titles. But BookPeople didn’t just survive. It thrived. Under the leadership of Steve Bercu, it cemented its place as an Austin icon.

BookPeople is more than just a place to buy books. It’s a place to discover new authors, engage in lively discussions, and connect with fellow bookworms. The store hosts numerous author events each week, bringing literary giants and rising stars to Austin. It’s a place where you can stumble upon a hidden gem. It’s a place where you can lose yourself in the stacks. It’s a place where the love of reading is celebrated. BookPeople is a testament to the enduring power of books. It’s a place where stories come alive, and where the “book people” of Austin gather to share their passion for literature. So, take your time. Explore the shelves. Discover something new. At BookPeople, there’s a story waiting for everyone.
