What began as a humble Hainanese-speaking congregation in 1922 has blossomed into the Holy Grace Presbyterian Church. It stands here today as a testament to faith and community. This church’s story is one of growth. It is also about adaptation.

The story of Holy Grace Presby Church begins in a rented shop house on Purvis Street. Imagine a small group of godly, Hainanese-speaking Christians gathering. They worshipped God and aimed to share the gospel with their fellow Hainanese. This fellowship was initially known as “Singapore Hainanese Christian Preaching Station.”

As the congregation grew, it moved to Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church. It was then called “Singapore Hainanese Christian Congregation”. Rev J.A.B Cook assisted this transition. The growing needs of the congregation were obvious. Rev Alan S. Moore Anderson rented a larger space at 158 Middle Road.

Preacher Tan Yi Lan ministered to the people. The congregation relocated to 5 Albert Street. It was renamed “Church of Christ in China Hainanese Holy Grace Church.” Preacher Tee See Nam then took the role of preacher. The church’s growth continued. They moved to a bigger premise at Geylang Lorong 26. At that point it was renamed again as “Church of Christ in China Holy Grace Church.”

Elder Ou Kee Yong, Rev Loo Thian-Liong, and Rev Frank Balchin served as pastors and Interim Moderators. Rev Kenny Yeo joined the church. It was finally named “Holy Grace Presbyterian Church.” This name reflects its identity today.

A significant milestone was the purchase of its current location on Upper East Coast Road. This marked a new chapter for the church. With God’s blessing, the church expanded its services. They introduced Mandarin and English services. They even extended their reach to Kuantan, Malaysia. There they established Hainanese services.

To accommodate this growth, an expansion project commenced. The existing building was renovated. The new building was completed on June 15, 2003.

Today, Holy Grace Presby Church continues its mission. It leads a vibrant church life. It is anchored in teaching the Word. It focuses on evangelism. The church serves the people.
As you stand here, remember the journey of Holy Grace Presby Church. From its humble beginnings to its present form. It is a story of faith, growth, and unwavering commitment to its community.
