Did you know that Bush Lake was once just a bay? Imagine a time long ago before the bustling city of Bloomington existed. Bush Lake wasn’t a lake at all. It was a quiet bay tucked into Andersons Lake a much larger body of water. This was back in the mid-19th century when European settlers first arrived in the area. Over time this small bay separated into its own entity the Bush Lake we know today. By 1890 it was already distinctly referred to as Bush Lake.
Today Bush Lake is a popular spot for recreation. It sits in the southwest corner of Bloomington Minnesota near the border of Eden Prairie. It’s 172.2 acres of sparkling water with a maximum depth of 28 feet. Fishers rejoice Bush Lake offers a diverse catch. Bluegill Northern Pike Pumpkinseed Sunfish Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch are just some of the species swimming in its depths.
The lake boasts excellent water quality. However occasional algae blooms can appear in the summer months due to urban stormwater runoff. This runoff contains excess phosphorus a nutrient that fuels algae growth. The lake is considered mesotrophic meaning it has a moderate level of nutrients supporting a good balance of aquatic life. Several invasive species such as curly-leaf pondweed Eurasian watermilfoil and common carp also reside in Bush Lake.
Recreation lovers will be thrilled. Bush Lake offers swimming boating and fishing. Two parks flank the lake one on the east and one on the west. East Bush Lake Park provides beach access and swimming. West Bush Lake Park offers canoe and kayak access along with storage for these watercraft. Both parks offer amenities such as picnic shelters playgrounds volleyball courts and public restrooms. A multi-use path connects the two parks allowing for a pleasant stroll around the southern edge of the lake. While motorized boats are allowed on Bush Lake their horsepower is limited to six.
