Have you ever wondered how a church can be born from the ashes of another? Today we stand before Christ The Saviour in Ealing, a place where the past and present intertwine. This church, standing proudly on Ealing Broadway, has a long and fascinating history. Built back in 1852, it was originally known as Christ Church. This beautiful building is a testament to the architectural talents of George Gilbert Scott, a prominent figure in the Gothic Revival movement. Christ The Saviour Church was not merely a place of worship, but a beacon of hope and community for the growing town of Ealing. It was, however, a church that was destined to witness both triumph and tragedy. In 1916, Christ Church welcomed a daughter church, St Saviour’s, a place filled with its own sense of community and faith. Sadly, during the Second World War, St Saviour’s was destroyed by bombs. In its place, a makeshift church, affectionately known as Little St Saviour’s, was established in the parish hall. The impact of the war did not spare Christ Church either; the blast of the bomb damaged its roof and shattered much of its beautiful stained-glass windows. While the windows were eventually restored, a few fragments of the original glass remain, standing as a silent reminder of the devastation that befell the church during the war. It was a time of immense hardship. This experience led to a profound decision in 1951. The two parishes, Christ Church and St Saviour’s, were merged, and a new name was chosen. Christ Church became Christ The Saviour, a title that symbolized the church’s resilience and steadfast commitment to the community. Christ the King became the church’s feast of title, and it is still celebrated today. Today, Christ The Saviour is not just a place of worship, but a symbol of London’s rich history and enduring spirit. Its story is a poignant reminder of the challenges that have shaped our world and the enduring power of faith and community. As you stand here, take a moment to reflect upon the past, its struggles, and its triumphs. Christ The Saviour is more than a building; it is a living testament to the strength of the human spirit.
