Beneath its magnificent domes, the Shree Swaminarayan Temple stands as a testament to artistry and devotion. This is Britain’s first authentic Hindu temple. It is also Europe’s first traditional Hindu stone temple. Forget converted secular buildings. Here, the stones themselves whisper tales of faith.
Completed in 1995, the Shree Swaminarayan Temple is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant center for the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha BAPS organization. Pramukh Swami Maharaj inaugurated it. This sacred space offers a permanent exhibition called Understanding Hinduism. A cultural center adds to the experience with an assembly hall and a gymnasium. You can even find a bookshop and offices here.
Imagine the dedication. The Shree Swaminarayan Temple is on Pramukh Swami Road. This is near the North Circular Road. It covers over 102000 square feet. Look up. The Shree Swaminarayan Temple rises 21 meters high. It stretches 60 meters long. Its exterior shines with Bulgarian limestone. The interior dazzles with Indian and Italian marble. Over 60000 cubic feet of stone comprise the mandir. This was achieved without using any steel. Seven shikhars pierce the sky. Six gummats add to its grandeur. Further, 193 sthambhas stand tall. Gaze at the 32 gavakshas. Admire the four jharukhas. The central dome reaches 10 meters. It was inspired by the Delwara Jain Mandir. National Geographic once called it A London Landmark.
Adjacent to the Shree Swaminarayan Temple sits the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Haveli. It serves as a cultural center. Unlike the stone mandir, the haveli is crafted from wood. English oak and Burmese teak form panels and screens. Craftsmen in India carved intricate patterns. The Burmese teak came from sustainable forests. For every 226 English oak trees used, over 2300 saplings were planted. The haveli design evokes the havelis of Gujarat India. It took 150 craftsmen three years to carve 17000 square feet of wood. Inside, a pillarless prayer hall accommodates 3000 people.
The Shree Swaminarayan Temple is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Sculpted flowerbeds and lush lawns create a serene atmosphere. The garden features parterre and formal styles. These styles illustrate Hindu motifs.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj envisioned the Shree Swaminarayan Temple fifteen years before its construction. It adheres to the Shilpa Shastras. CB Sompura served as the lead architect. Each stone underwent rigorous testing. Construction started in 1992. The Italian marble was carved in India. It was then shipped to London. In December 1993, 169 craftsmen started working on the haveli’s designs.
The Shree Swaminarayan Temple’s construction involved 450 craftsmen. One hundred full-time volunteers were engaged. More than 1000 part-time volunteers dedicated their time. They recycled over 7 million aluminum cans.
