Paróquia São Francisco de Assis was established in 1945. The following year, Franciscan missionaries from the United States arrived. The adjoining Convento São Francisco was officially recognized in 1947. This marked a pivotal moment, as it became the first Franciscan presence in Latin America. The Convento continues to serve as the motherhouse of the Custody of the Immaculate Conception of Brazil. It’s led by Friar Carlos Roberto de Oliveira Charles. He also serves as the Convent’s guardian. Leading the Paróquia São Francisco de Assis is Friar Ronaldo Gomes da Silva. Look closely at the building. The first floor, adorned with tiles mimicking stone, grounds the structure. Above, a triangular apex reaches towards the sky. The inscription “PARÓQUIA SÃO FRANCISCO DE ASSIS” boldly proclaims its identity. Five symmetrically arched windows grace the central section, allowing light to illuminate the interior. A large panel depicting St. Francis of Assisi adorns one side. On the other, a bell tower stands tall, its presence a reminder of the church’s role in the community.
