Founded in March 1989 Renewal Christian Church stands proudly at 88 St Francis Road Singapore. Its beginnings trace back to a group of Christians from several churches. They united through a shared vision to spread the Gospel. This initial group numbered 36. Their first meetings took place in what is now the church’s annex.
The early years were challenging. Financial difficulties were a constant hurdle. The group had initially relied on support from other churches. That support ended when Renewal became independent. Finding a stable location proved equally difficult. Early services were held in rented spaces. These spaces were often temporary. They even used a bar at one point.
Despite these obstacles Renewal experienced remarkable growth. The congregation swelled from fewer than 40 to over 130 within months. By 1990 the church had moved to its current location at St George. The growth continued. By 1993 the congregation numbered over 700. This necessitated five services a week.
This expansion led to the first fundraising campaign for a new building. The target was a staggering 75000 Singapore dollars. It seemed an impossible feat for a church only a few years old. Yet God provided. By the end of 1991 the church had found a permanent home. The first service in the new building took place there.
Renewal also launched its first hymn collection in 1991. These hymns were written by members. They reflected their faith journey. Hymn writing became a central part of the church’s life. It helped to express their faith. It fostered a sense of community. A second hymn book followed in 1993.
The 1990s saw the ordination of several pastors. These pastors guided the church through periods of growth and challenge. In 1998 the church faced an internal crisis. The founding pastor resigned. This created uncertainty and upheaval. The church rallied. They called back several pastors. They included pastors from the church and from others. They worked together. Renewal was revitalized.
Renewal continued its outreach efforts. This included missions to China. The church expanded its ministry to include the Chinese community in Singapore. The initial work with around 100 members expanded to several hundred. The church also purchased land. This land finally provided a permanent home. This success came despite the difficulties.
Challenges persisted. In the early 2000s land acquisition became necessary. The existing space was inadequate. Raising the necessary funds proved immensely difficult. God miraculously provided. The church acquired the land.
Renewal’s commitment to serving its community is evident. It established a community service network. This network serves the nearby St George neighborhood. The church provides various services. These services include after-school programs and assistance for the needy. It even offers free dental services. This reflects the church’s heart for others.
Through decades of challenges and growth Renewal Christian Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story is one of answered prayer and perseverance. It shows the transformative power of God’s love. Today Renewal continues to serve God. It serves its community. It looks towards a bright future.
