This unassuming pastoral center, nestled in the heart of Jakarta, bears a name steeped in missionary zeal. Pastoran Katolik ST Arnoldus Santo Arnoldus Jassen pays homage to Saint Arnoldus Janssen, a German priest who dedicated his life to spreading the word of God. Born in 1837, Janssen witnessed a tumultuous period in German history. The Kulturkampf, a period of anti-Catholic policies, fueled his desire to establish a mission house outside of Germany. He found refuge in Steyl, Netherlands, where he founded the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 1875. Pastoran Katolik ST Arnoldus Santo Arnoldus Jassen stands as a testament to Janssen’s enduring legacy. His vision extended beyond the SVD. He also established two congregations of sisters. The Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) in 1889 and the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (SSpSAP) in 1896. These sisters played a crucial role in supporting the SVD’s missionary work. A remarkable story connected to Janssen involves a young Filipina girl named Pamela Avellanosa. In 1995, she suffered a near-fatal bicycle accident. Falling into a coma, her recovery seemed improbable. Her family, fervent in their belief, prayed for a miracle through Janssen’s intercession. On January 15th, the feast day of Saint Arnoldus Janssen, Pamela awoke from her coma. The Catholic Church recognized this event as a miracle. This miracle ultimately paved the way for Janssen’s canonization in 2003. Pastoran Katolik ST Arnoldus Santo Arnoldus Jassen serves as a quiet reminder of the power of faith and the global reach of one man’s missionary vision.
