Leövey Klára Gimnázium stands as a significant educational institution in Budapest’s District IX. It operates today as a four and six-year secondary school. It also has a department of adult education. Let’s delve into its history.
The predecessor of Leövey Klára Gimnázium was the Ranolder Institute. It opened in 1875. Ranolder János the Bishop of Veszprém founded it. He aimed to provide an institution for women in Ferencváros to learn in Hungarian. Ferencváros was mainly inhabited by German natives.
After nationalization in 1948 and 1949 the school became a training school for primary teachers. In 1955 it was renamed Leövey Klára. It then transformed into a high school.
Leövey Klára Gimnázium provides education for students aged 14 to 18. The regular program involves a four or five-year course. The adult education department offers a chance for young adults to obtain a secondary certificate. This is done through night school or correspondence courses without interrupting their jobs.
The school also provides practice-oriented courses for those who cannot immediately pursue higher education. In 2008 and 2009 around 650 students attended the regular program. Around 210 students were in the adult department. By 2011 and 2012 these numbers increased to 720 and 330 respectively.
Leövey Klára Gimnázium has been a member of the Network of European Innovative Schools since 2003. This allows the school to test new teaching methods and participate in international programs.
Environmental education plays a key role. Students learn about environmental protection through projects and trips. The school was among the first in Hungary to introduce economics as an elective.
