Could you imagine a church starting under a tree? The New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church has a unique beginning. It stands as a beacon of faith in Dallas. The church’s story began in September 1935. Rev. S. G. Gooden Sr. founded it. Mother Callie Murray offered her home at 2310 Routh Street. Services were initially held under a tree on her property.
Rev. Gooden trusted in God’s guidance. He rented a three-room house on Caddo Alley. The front room served as the sanctuary. An apple box became the pulpit. Lanterns provided light. As membership grew, partitions were removed to accommodate everyone.
In September 1947, the congregation built its first brick building. It was located at 2525 Caddo Street. Rev. Gooden passed away on March 1, 1958. The church faced a challenging period. Recalling his message “Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled”, they continued in prayer.
On July 14, 1958, Rev. G. B. Prince Jr. became the pastor. He worked to clear all debts. Rev. Prince taught tithing and increased manpower. He organized auxiliaries. The church expanded by remodeling the sanctuary. A two-story educational building was erected.
On April 9, 1983, the church exchanged its Caddo Street property. They received property at Washington and Munger Avenue from Southland Corporation. A groundbreaking service was held on August 14, 1983. The new church home opened on November 10, 1985.
After 31 years of service, Rev. Prince passed away. Rev. Curtis W. Wallace became the third pastor on January 10, 1990. Under his leadership, the New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church membership grew considerably. Numerous ministries were added.
Outreach and Evangelism became central to the church’s mission. The Prison Ministry and Soul Winners Action Team are examples. The Crisis Ministry and Boys to Men mentoring program were founded. The Adopt-A-School Program reclaimed the neighborhood. Pastor Wallace emphasized mending spirits. More than 4,500 souls have been added to the Kingdom of God through this church.
Today, New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is now led by Dr. Carlos D. Williams. The church emphasizes compassion, service, holiness, and worship. The Media Ministry captures services on CD and DVD.
The church stands as a testament to faith. It demonstrates resilience and community spirit. It also shows a commitment to spreading God’s love. New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church welcomes all. It invites everyone to join in worship and service.
