“Imagine,” says a voice from the past. It echoes through the stones of Bonn Minster. This magnificent church stands as one of Germany’s oldest. Its history stretches back over a thousand years. We are standing before Bonner Münster. It is also known as St. Cassius and Florentius Church. Some call it simply The Minster.

The story of Bonn Minster begins with two Roman legionaries. Cassius and Florentius were their names. They were executed for their Christian faith around AD 362. Their remains lie beneath the altar. This makes the Minster a pilgrimage site since medieval times.

Construction of the original church started in the 4th century AD. Northmen invasions destroyed much of it during the 9th century AD. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent many changes. These reflect different architectural styles. Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements are all visible.

The basilica structure features three naves. Rows of columns support round arches. This is typical of Romanesque architecture. The choir showcases early Gothic influences. Pointed arch windows display stained glass. They portray biblical scenes. Intricate stone carvings on the exterior walls tell stories from Christian mythology. Inside, admire frescoes adorning chapel ceilings. Elaborate altars embellished in gold leaf represent the Baroque period. The 92-meter-high steeple is a striking feature. It is visible from afar. It dominates Bonn’s skyline.

Inside Bonn Minster, discover many notable features. There is a Romanesque baptismal font dating back to the 12th century. An ornate pulpit from the 16th century also stands here. Numerous tombs and epitaphs commemorate important personalities. Several archbishops of Cologne are among them.

The crypt houses relics of St. Cassius and Florentius. Relics of other saints brought here during medieval times are displayed here. This makes it one of the largest relic collections in Germany. Music lovers will appreciate the historic organ. It was built in the late 18th century. It continues to charm audiences during regular concerts.

Bonn Minster experienced two coronations. In 1314, Friedrich der Schöne was crowned here. In 1346, Karl IV was also crowned within these walls. The blue-red windows of the apse are remarkable. They represent the city’s patrons. These windows are works of the Rhine expressionist Heinrich Campendonk.

Provost Gerhard von Are exhumed relics from the martyrs’ graves in 1166. They were preserved in precious shrines on the high altar. Sadly, these shrines were destroyed during the Cologne War in 1583 and 1584.

Today, Bonn Minster remains an active place of worship. It offers daily services and special liturgical events throughout the year. It welcomes tourists to explore its rich history. They come to admire its architectural beauty. A small museum within the premises provides insights into the church’s past. It displays various artifacts. Guided tours offer detailed information about architecture and artworks. They explain significant historical events associated with this cathedral.

Bonn Minster served as inspiration for another famous church. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin took cues from its design. Kaiser Wilhelm II had studied in Bonn. He was familiar with the Minster’s impressive structure.
