“A photographic studio in a barn?” you might ask. Right here in Passage Louis Thuillier, that’s exactly what thrived during World War I. This seemingly ordinary passage was once home to Louis Thuillier, a man of simple beginnings with an insatiable curiosity for the world beyond his farm. Louis, a farmer by trade, found himself captivated by the possibilities of photography. He taught himself the craft, poring over manuals while driving his tractor. The story goes that he even accidentally wiped out his entire flock of chickens while experimenting with photo development chemicals! But his passion, fueled by the entrepreneurial spirit that blossomed during wartime, wouldn’t be deterred. Together with his wife, Antoinette, they transformed their barn into a haven for soldiers passing through their village, offering them a warm meal and a chance to capture a moment in time. Antoinette, with her charm and wit, drew soldiers in, while Louis, using his trusty motorbike and other props, created unforgettable photographic memories. Little did the Thuilliers know, they were documenting history, freezing fleeting moments of joy and camaraderie amidst the turmoil of war. Their legacy, the “Lost Diggers of Vignacourt”, lay forgotten for nearly a century, a testament to the power of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. And though the barn is gone, the spirit of the Thuilliers endures here in Passage Louis Thuillier.
