As fate would have it, a paper mill, established in 1844, would become the catalyst for Silkeborg’s growth. It was a bold move, a gamble even, but one that paid off magnificently. With the Gudenå River providing cheap water power and the surrounding forests offering abundant raw materials, the paper mill thrived. The little settlement around it flourished too, with residents attracted by the new opportunities. The town was officially charted in 1900.
