Beneath the Jakarta sky, at TPU Tegal Alur, stories whisper from the silent stones. TPU Tegal Alur isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a repository of lives lived, both known and unknown. This sprawling 52.5-hectare site in Kalideres, West Jakarta, holds over 40,000 graves. A significant portion, 1.8 hectares, is dedicated to those who passed without a name or family to claim them. Since 2012, over 5,000 souls have found their final rest in this section. Some, like Asan who passed on September 9th, have names but no mourners. Others remain forever “unknown,” their stories lost to time. TPU Tegal Alur became a focal point during the Covid-19 pandemic. The vast, undifferentiated land provided space for the mounting casualties. At the pandemic’s peak, the cemetery staff, equipped with specialized training and gear, interred 40 to 50 bodies daily. Amidst this crisis, a beacon of compassion emerged. The Perkumpulan Sosial Himpunan Bersatu Teguh Sumbar Riau erected a free crematorium in the non-Muslim section of TPU Tegal Alur, providing solace to grieving families burdened by soaring cremation costs. TPU Tegal Alur also serves as Jakarta’s primary resting place for unidentified bodies. Many are elderly from nursing homes or those who lived on the streets. Some are victims of accidents or violence, their identities lost in the chaos. Caretaker Abdul Rohman meticulously documents each unidentified body, holding onto a sliver of hope that families might one day come searching. He’s also tasked with the difficult job of exhuming remains for families who eventually learn of their loved one’s fate. TPU Tegal Alur holds a poignant tapestry of lives, reflecting the complexities of Jakarta. It is a place of sorrow, remembrance, and a testament to the enduring human spirit, even in anonymity.
