Picture this a medieval town nestled within Karlsruhe’s walls. This is Jockgrimer Hinterstädtel. Its ancient stones whisper tales of centuries past. Jockgrimer Hinterstädtel is arguably the oldest part of Jockgrim. Its history stretches back to the 15th century. Imagine the imposing city walls. They once boasted walkways and towers. A moat protected the bishopric’s little town. At the spur’s tip stands the former home and studio garden of Professor Albert Haueisen a renowned artist.

The Torberg also known as the Dörleberg by locals is a steep incline leading to the former east gate. A house with glazed roof tiles designed by engineer Eugen Haueisen sits on the city wall opposite the church. It dates back to the turn of the century. Below the Torberg flows the Wäschbach. Here the women of Jockgrim once washed their laundry. The Woog footpath follows the city wall. Near the Schlossbrücke where a gate to the former castle stood a descent to the lower town was created. From below you can get a stunning view of what was once Jockgrim’s fortress.

Jockgrimer Hinterstädtel also boasts the Lina-Sommer-Platz. A gift from Walter Sommer to his mother Lina on her 65th birthday in 1927. The many half-timbered houses are a testament to the area’s rich past. These structures range from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Built on a steep slope a former Rhine riverbed the protected town is bordered on three sides by the equally protected city walls. The historic houses are integrated into the city walls themselves. The Jockgrim medieval market has been held here for decades.
