Mariscal Toribio de Luzuriaga a Peruvian-Argentine soldier was a significant figure in South American independence. His life was one of both glory and heartbreaking sorrow.
Born in Huaraz Peru in 1782 Luzuriaga began his career as a secretary. He later joined the military distinguishing himself during the British invasions of the River Plate. He was even captured by the English in 1806. His bravery and skill led to rapid advancement in the ranks.
Luzuriaga actively participated in the May Revolution of 1810. He fought against the Spanish royalists in Upper Peru. He served as governor of Corrientes Province. He rose to the rank of general accompanying José de San Martín in the Army of the Andes. Their mission was the liberation of Chile from Spanish rule. Between 1817 and 1820 he was governor of Cuyo Province. He followed San Martín to Peru in 1821. San Martín appointed him president of the Huaylas prefecture. On December 21 1821 Luzuriaga achieved the highest honor becoming the first Grand Marshal of Peru.
This was the pinnacle of his military career. His close relationship with San Martín was crucial to his success. However with San Martín’s departure from Peru Luzuriaga lost his key supporter. He returned to Argentina retiring from public life.
His later years were marked by hardship and obscurity. He faced financial ruin. He even had to sell his military decorations to survive. His once brilliant career faded into unfortunate poverty. Overcome by debt and despair he tragically ended his life by suicide in Pergamino Buenos Aires in 1842.
Mariscal Toribio de Luzuriaga’s story is a complex one. It’s a story of remarkable military achievements and ultimately profound personal tragedy. His legacy remains a testament to the sacrifices made for independence. Yet it is also a cautionary tale about the fragility of life and the bitter taste of oblivion.
