Can a rock truly resemble a dog? Look up at Pedra do Cão, the Stone Dog. Here in Nova Friburgo, this natural monument stands as a proud symbol of the city. Its name, Pedra do Cão, literally translates to “Stone Dog”. Its unique shape, resembling a seated dog, has captivated locals and tourists for generations. The rock formation is part of the Furnas do Catete park, a landscape of exotic grottos, rock walls, and picturesque peaks. Pedra do Cão, the park’s highest point, stands at an impressive 100 meters tall. To reach its base, you’ll embark on a short, scenic hike. The trail winds through the park, crossing twelve bridges and rustic wooden stairs. The hike takes about forty minutes, a manageable climb even for casual walkers.
The story of Pedra do Cão is intertwined with local lore. In the 1950s, Colonel José Augusto Zebendê owned the land. Visiting priests, intrigued by stories from the colonel’s workers, ventured into the park. They discovered the remarkable rock formation. They then contacted Governor Roberto Silveira, who, after a helicopter survey, declared the area a state-protected site. This laid the foundation for the Pedra do Cão we know today. In 1960, Governor Silveira initiated construction of Furnas do Catete park. Tragically, he died in a helicopter accident, halting the project. His successor, Celso Peçanha, restarted the work alongside Nova Friburgo’s tourism commission. The park officially opened in 1962.
Over the years, the park faced closures due to neglect. Yet, it persevered, thanks in part to a dramatic event in 1993. A large root growing near the “dog’s neck” threatened to topple the head. Alpinists and chemists intervened, saving the iconic landmark. Pedra do Cão remains a treasured part of Nova Friburgo. It stands tall, a testament to nature’s artistry and the community’s dedication to preserving its natural wonders. The park offers more than just the Stone Dog. Explore the Toca da Onça (Jaguar’s Lair), Igrejas dos Macacos (Monkey Churches), and the Salão do Escoteiro (Scout’s Hall). Rest by the lake at the park’s entrance. Enjoy refreshments at the kiosk.
