“A stick!” That’s what the sacred Bodhi tree sapling from Sri Lanka resembled when it first arrived in Australia. We are standing in front of the Bodhi Pagoda, a testament to the journey of Buddhism.

This pagoda is a beacon of peace. It stands as a symbol of wisdom. It embodies compassion.

The story of how a descendant of the original Bodhi tree made its way here is remarkable. The original Bodhi tree is in India. Buddha attained enlightenment under it. A branch was taken to Sri Lanka in 288 BC. This makes it the oldest tree planted by a human.

Imagine the biosecurity hurdles. The sapling had to comply with strict import conditions. This ensured it was free of dangerous plant diseases. Xylella fastidiosa is Australia’s number one plant pest threat. The sapling spent twelve months in quarantine. Plant pathologists checked it weekly.

Wrapped in paper, inside a polystyrene box, it had a rough trip. The stem snapped. There was insect damage. Most of its foliage had to be removed. It looked like a stick after treatment.

Bodhi trees thrive in hot, humid conditions. To help it grow, it was put in a special hot house. Temperatures ranged from 25 to 35 degrees. Extra light was provided. New leaves grew within the first week. Now, it stands almost one metre tall.

The Bodhi Pagoda is associated with the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion. It aligns with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This journey represents more than just a plant import. It symbolizes cultural exchange. It highlights spiritual connection.

This Bodhi tree symbolizes wisdom. It also embodies compassion and awareness. It stands as the oldest known record of official plant import between two countries.

Sanghamitta brought this tree from India to Sri Lanka. She led ten Buddhist nuns. Sanghamitta is considered the first woman environmental ambassador. She is a spiritual leader. This event stands as the oldest example of women’s empowerment.

The Bodhi Dhamma Buddhist Association aims to build a righteous society. It promotes spiritual harmony. This harmony is based on Buddhist teachings and values. They provide a welcoming environment. People of all ages can learn. They can experience cultural heritage and mindfulness. This promotes a positive approach to living in a multicultural society.

The Bodhi Dhamma Vihara is building a Buddhist temple. It is located at The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo. This will provide a memorable religious place. It is worshiped by Buddhists and non-Buddhists.
