“Bähnle”, as the locals affectionately call it, is ready for departure. The Schlossgartenbahn in Karlsruhe is more than just a train. It’s a journey through time and a beloved landmark.

This miniature railway has been delighting visitors since the Bundesgartenschau in 1967. The Bundesgartenschau is a biennial Federal horticultural show. Originally, a private operator ran the two and a half kilometer track. In 1988, the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe took over. Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe is the municipal transport company.

Now, the Schlossgartenbahn boasts a fleet of unique locomotives. There is a diesel locomotive. There is a Porsche-Lok. And there is the charming Dampflok Greif steam engine. The Greif steam engine is operated by a subcontractor. Annually, it carries around 50,000 passengers.

The Porsche locos are particularly interesting. These four-wheel petrol locomotives were designed after Porsche cars. They were built in 1959. They were initially used in the German-French Gardens in Saarbrücken. They also appeared at Expo64 in Lausanne. The red and yellow trains eventually found their home here.

The Dampflok Greif has its own fascinating history. Henschel built it in 1939. It served the German road authorities. Later, building contractor Hans Vatter owned it. Manfred Halle, a VBK employee, discovered it in scrap condition. He lovingly restored it. In 1970, the Greif was converted to wood-firing. It gained its colorful Western-style appearance. Today, it runs on Sundays during the summer.

The VBK workshops rebuilt the diesel locomotive. They transformed a Gmeinder four-wheel diesel into the SGB 60. This powerful loco is the main workhorse. It usually pulls three or four coaches.

A ride on the Schlossgartenbahn takes about 20 minutes. It offers a unique perspective on the beautiful gardens. The railway operates regularly on Sundays and public holidays. Please check local press for schedule updates.

The Schlossgartenbahn’s history is as captivating as the ride itself. From its humble beginnings as a temporary attraction to its current status as a cherished institution, it embodies the spirit of Karlsruhe. Its unique locomotives and dedicated operators ensure that the “Bähnle” will continue to delight generations to come. As our little train chugs along the tracks, imagine the stories it could tell from the past 50 years.
