Masjid Al-Azhar in Kebayoran Baru is more than a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. Originally called Masjid Agung Kebayoran its name changed in 1960. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mahmud Shaltut suggested the name change during a visit.

Fourteen figures from the Masyumi Party envisioned this mosque and school. They founded the Islamic Dormitory School Foundation in 1952. The Ministry of Religious Affairs provided some funding. Jakarta’s mayor donated four hectares of land. Construction began November 19 1953. It was completed in 1958.

Buya Hamka a prominent Indonesian ulama played a pivotal role. He advised building the mosque first. He envisioned ample office and meeting space. This ensured activities including classes could continue even while the school was under construction. Hamka became the mosque’s chief imam. His leadership made Masjid Al-Azhar a center for Islamic revival and the propagation of faith. During the 1965-1966 crisis the mosque became a hub for anti-communist sentiment among Muslims.

The mosque’s Middle Eastern style architecture is striking. It features a white onion dome and a single minaret. Its design is unique. It expertly blends Middle Eastern and European elements. A kindergarten was added in 1967. The educational initiatives culminated in the establishment of Al-Azhar University Indonesia in 2000. Masjid Al-Azhar was declared a Jakarta heritage site and a national cultural heritage site in 1993.
