Whispers of history drift on the Thames breeze. Welcome to Wheatley’s Eyot. This seemingly tranquil island holds centuries of stories. From prehistoric times bronze age weapons were discovered here. A long bronze spearhead and a bronze sword. They hint at the island’s importance in ancient times.

Wheatley’s Eyot or Wheatley Ait is a small island in the River Thames. It’s about 20 acres in size. Located near Sunbury Lock it’s in the borough of Elmbridge Surrey. But its postal address is Sunbury-on-Thames. This unique geography has shaped its history.

For a long time access was only by boat. Imagine the challenges faced by residents. In the 19th century Thomas Vincent owned Wheatley’s Eyot and Watersplash Farm. He later sold the land. A Shepperton landowner related to Edgar Vincent the 1st Viscount D’Abernon was involved. The island has changed hands many times.

In the early 20th century the island saw tragedy. A doodlebug bomb fell near Tumbling Bay. It destroyed bungalows and injured people. Life on Wheatley’s Eyot hasn’t always been peaceful.

In the 2006 the Environment Agency increased bridge usage costs. This caused hardship for the ten families living here. They faced difficulties accessing essential services. After negotiations a compromise was reached.

Today Wheatley’s Eyot is more accessible. A bridge built in 1946 provides easier access. Houses and chalets line the riverbanks. Boatyards and dredging facilities occupy some sections. It’s a mix of residential and industrial areas.

Even today the island retains its charm. The Fishing Gazette in 1879 described it as an idyllic spot. Perfect for picnics under shady trees. The tranquil atmosphere is a far cry from the bustling city nearby. Wheatley’s Eyot is a little piece of history. A testament to resilience and the enduring beauty of the Thames. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. A place worth exploring and remembering.
