Journey with me back to 2012. Imagine the dust and commotion around Escuela 228 in the Las Canteras neighborhood of Montevideo. The old building, formerly known as Escuela 255, was undergoing a major transformation. This wasn’t just a renovation, it was a rebirth. Escuela 228 was about to become a vibrant hub for young learners. The Ministry of Transport and Public Works invested a substantial 11 million pesos into this project. They revamped everything. New electrical systems, plumbing, and flooring were installed. The patios were revitalized and new windows brought light into the classrooms. A brand-new kitchen and dining area were constructed. This addition would allow the children to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and snacks on-site. This was especially important because Escuela 228 was transitioning to a full-time program the following year. By October of that year, the rejuvenated Escuela 228 opened its doors. Fifty children, aged 3 to 5, filled the bright, spacious classrooms. They came from the surrounding neighborhoods: Pantaleón Pérez, Usina 5, Camino Carrasco, and the Mesa 1 Cooperative. Seven dedicated teachers, supported by four assistants, guided the children in two shifts. The school embraced a unique pedagogical approach, centering around artistic expression. Music, visual arts, dance, and singing became the language of learning. Children, teachers, parents, and the wider community all participated in this creative endeavor. Today, Escuela 228 continues to thrive as a testament to the power of community and the importance of early childhood education.
