“Nymphéas,” breathed a voice from the crowd, “such a poetic name.” Indeed, Passage des Nymphéas, tucked away in Boulogne-Billancourt, may seem unassuming, but it holds a connection to a grand artistic endeavor. The name, Nymphéas, or Water Lilies, evokes Claude Monet’s monumental series of paintings. While this passage isn’t in Giverny, where Monet’s famous water garden resided, the shared name opens a doorway into understanding the artist’s vision. Monet’s Nymphéas project consumed him for three decades, from the late 1890s until his death in 1926. He transformed his garden at Giverny into a living canvas, the water lilies and their reflections his primary subjects. The series culminated in massive panels, gifted to the French state in 1922 and housed in the Musée de l’Orangerie since 1927. The sheer scale of the work, nearly 300 paintings including over forty large-format panels, is breathtaking. Monet envisioned the Nymphéas not just as individual paintings, but as an immersive experience. He meticulously planned the two oval rooms at the Orangerie, orchestrating the placement of each panel to envelop the viewer in a continuous waterscape. The curved walls, the zenithal light, the subtle shifts in color and perspective, all contribute to the illusion of a boundless, eternal pond. This attention to the viewer’s experience, this desire to create a total work of art, echoes in the very name, Passage des Nymphéas. Just as Monet’s paintings transport us to his water garden, this passage, however briefly, connects us to the spirit of his grand project.
