Born in 1882 in Istanbul Kazım Karabekir’s life was one of remarkable military and political achievements. His story is intertwined with the very fabric of Turkey’s history. Here before us stands a testament to his legacy. This is the Kazım Karabekir Camii.

This mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living monument. It speaks of a man who rose through the ranks of the Ottoman Army. He then played a pivotal role in the Turkish War of Independence. His military prowess helped shape the modern Turkish state.

Kazım Karabekir’s early years were marked by his father’s military service. This led to a life of travel within the Ottoman Empire. He returned to Istanbul in 1893 settling in the Zeyrek Quarter. His education at Fatih Military Secondary School and the prestigious Kuleli Military High School laid the foundation for his future career.

His military career began in 1906. He served in North Macedonia fighting Greek and Bulgarian rebels. He later joined the Committee of Union and Progress a significant political organization of the time. His talent and bravery were quickly recognized. He rose through the ranks with promotions to senior captain then major.

The Balkan Wars saw him actively involved in the defense of Edirne. He was even captured during a battle. World War I brought new challenges and opportunities. He served in Gallipoli and Iraq showing exceptional leadership and strategic thinking. His command of the 18th Corps resulted in a resounding victory over British forces. Later he commanded the 2nd Corps on the Caucasus front fighting against Russian and Armenian forces.

The Turkish War of Independence proved to be his most significant contribution. He disobeyed orders to surrender to Entente powers. He armed the Turkish rural population defying British attempts to demobilize the Ottoman Army. His leadership of the Eastern Front secured vital territories. He successfully negotiated the Treaty of Alexandropol. This gave Turkey significant territorial gains although it came at a cost. His army displaced and tragically caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Armenian civilians.

His political career began after the war. He served in Parliament and later founded the Progressive Republican Party. This party represented the first significant opposition to Atatürk the founder of the Republic. His political life was not without conflict. He was accused of involvement in an assassination attempt against Atatürk. He was found not guilty. He was later rehabilitated. He served as Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey before he passed away in 1948.

The Kazım Karabekir Camii stands as a symbol of his life. It represents his military prowess. It embodies his political contributions. More importantly it silently reminds us of the complexities of his legacy. A legacy etched in both triumph and tragedy in the heart of Istanbul.
