How about stepping back in time to 1946 when Saint John Vianney parish was just a dream. Imagine a small group of Catholics gathering for Mass in the lodge building at Kaposia Park. It was the humble beginning of something truly special.
Saint John Vianney parish has a story of faith community and growth. The first church was built in 1947. It was made from materials salvaged from two Army barracks. Parishioners completed it quickly in April of that year.
In 1950 Saint John Vianney parish added a basement roller rink. This might sound unusual. But it was a creative way to raise money. The goal was to fund a combined church and school facility. The roller rink operated for several years. It brought fun and helped the community reach its financial goals.
Finally in 1955 the combined church and school opened. Saint John Vianney parish now had a central place for worship and education. This shows the parish’s dedication to serving both spiritual and academic needs.
The original Saint John Vianney parish building plan was completed in 1960. A new rectory and administrative office building were constructed. The old church was used as a convent for the Sisters of St Casimir for many years. These sisters originally ran the school.
Today Saint John Vianney is still very active. The religious education program thrives and is a very active part of the church. It serves students in grades K-8. The Saint John Vianney community is known for its pastoral outreach.
Recently Saint John Vianney parish has seen some beautiful updates. A new marble altar was installed and consecrated by Bishop Andrew Cozzens. Three new stained glass windows were installed. They depict Mary Joseph and Jesus. They enrich the worship space.
Saint John Vianney parish has grown from humble beginnings. It has always focused on faith community and service. From its start in a park lodge to its new windows the parish has a rich history. It remains a vibrant and important part of the community today.
