Originally a private home its first official mention is in the 1891 census. Its construction likely followed the arrival of the railway in 1884. The estate then grew to include a church sports facilities a model farm and several cottages.

Danes Hill didn’t start as a co-educational school. It began as a prep school for boys only. Boarding was later abandoned in 1975. The school expanded significantly when it acquired the nearby Bevendean School in 1982. This became the junior school. It then made the decision to welcome girls too. The school continues to thrive. New buildings have been added. It now boasts impressive facilities including a Science and IT centre and an Astroturf pitch.

Today Danes Hill is a leading preparatory school. Children from ages three to thirteen attend. The school’s success is remarkable. In 2019 all graduates gained entry to their chosen senior schools. Many achieved scholarships to prestigious schools like Eton and Harrow.

The school’s commitment to excellence is clear. Each pupil receives an individual timetable. Tutors provide daily guidance and support. A wide range of extracurricular activities enrich the school experience. Danes Hill fosters a sense of community and compassion. It encourages charitable work and engagement with the local community. Students participate in various initiatives to aid those in need both locally and internationally. Over £200000 has been raised for charity in recent years.
