Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church

Standing in front of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis, Illinois, you’re struck by its unassuming facade, a stark contrast to its rich history. Imagine this very spot, 13th and Tudor, nearly a century ago. Mount Zion’s second home, with its initial structure, the basement, where members gathered for worship. During the 1920s, Mount Zion became an active member of the New Salem Baptist District association, a testament to its growing influence in the community. The original church, established in 1917, under the pastorate of Reverend C.W. James, had already seen several ministers lead the congregation. The church was located in a storefront and the YWCA. However, as the congregation flourished, they needed a larger space. The congregation purchased land on 12th Street East Moline, Illinois, to build the first permanent Mt. Zion building. Later, a move to a larger space in 1948 was made, leading to the construction of their current edifice, a beautiful demonstration of their steadfast belief and unwavering faith. The church was established by pastors Reverend T. Moore King, Reverend C.G. Holston, Reverend John Clayton, and Reverend Harris of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend R.G. Gates served as pastor from 1947 to 1951. Today, the church stands as a beacon of hope and faith in the community, a testament to the resilience of its members and the strength of their shared belief.
