Is there a hidden orchard on Rue des Pommières? The name hints at a past filled with apple trees. This small street climbs from Rue de la Favorite to Rue Commandant Charcot. Rue des Pommières offers more than just a shortcut. It provides a glimpse into Lyon’s history.

Let’s step back to 1830. The Rue des Pommières appeared on a map as Ruelle des Pommières. It was a narrow lane then. Today, it retains its charm. The name Pommières suggests an old apple orchard. This orchard must have been memorable. It gave the street its name.

Cars can access only the first part of Rue des Pommières. This section runs from Rue de la Favorite to Rue du Manteau Jaune. The steeper part is for pedestrians only. Take a stroll up this slope. You will be rewarded with a view. From the top you can see the Monts d’Or and the Bastion.

Notice the architecture. The street passes between two houses on Rue de la Favorite. Then, it continues between two large houses on the east side. Near Rue du Manteau Jaune, property walls line the street. A large house stands behind them. At the top, a gate reveals a concrete building. This is the Sainte Enfance sisters’ building. It features windows with stained glass. On the west side, three large walls protect gardens.

Today, Rue des Pommières is mostly residential. Locals use it as a shortcut. During my visit in 2016, I spotted two interesting plaques. One belonged to the interprofessional mountain syndicate. The other was for Toulaho. Apparently Toulaho could take you to get a photo on top of Mount Everest.

Rue des Pommières offers a peek into Lyon’s past. It is a reminder of simpler times. A time when apple orchards thrived here. So next time you are in Lyon, take a walk on Rue des Pommières. Imagine the apple trees that once grew here. Enjoy the view. Consider a photo on Everest.
