Picture this a weathered cairn stands proudly on Leith Links. It silently guards the birthplace of modern golf. Leith Links the home of golf isn’t just a park it’s a living testament to a game’s rich history. Here on this very ground the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers held the world’s first golf competition in 1744. Thirteen rules were created for this tournament laying the foundation for the sport we know and love today.

Imagine the scene thirteen determined golfers teeing off on a five-hole course. They weren’t just playing a game they were shaping a legacy. Their actions here on Leith Links would echo through centuries influencing golf courses worldwide. The cairn you see commemorates that pivotal moment. It marks the spot where golf’s formal rules emerged from a simple silver club competition.

But Leith Links holds even more ancient secrets. This land witnessed the first documented injuries in golf. In 1571 nine Leith golfers fought off brigands a clash of clubs and swords on the very ground where you stand. A century later Sir Robert Sibbald a prominent physician experienced a less dramatic but equally memorable encounter. He was struck by a stray golf club during a leisurely stroll across the links.

Leith Links also played a role in international disputes. In 1681 the Duke of York brother of King Charles II engaged in a friendly match. He played against English courtiers to settle a claim of national ownership of golf. Scotland emerged victorious thanks to the skills of John Patersone a local ‘cordiner’ and golf ball maker. Patersone’s success wasn’t just sporting. He received a generous portion of the winnings. He used it to purchase a house on the Royal Mile dubbed ‘Golfers Land’.

The story of Leith Links isn’t just about golf. It encompasses centuries of Scottish history. The land bears witness to the Siege of Leith in 1560. English and Scottish troops dug trenches across this very ground. Two mounds known as Giant’s Brae and Lady Fyfe’s Brae remain to this day. They serve as silent reminders of this turbulent period. Even the plague of 1645 left its mark on Leith Links. Victims were buried here their final resting place now a part of this park’s legacy.

Today Leith Links is a vibrant community space. Children play football cricket is enjoyed and the Leith Festival Gala Day fills the park with music and laughter. Yet beneath the surface of this bustling activity lies a rich history. A history entwined with golf rivalries international competitions and even the somber echoes of a deadly plague. Remember as you leave Leith Links that every blade of grass has a story to tell. Every tree whispers tales of golf’s evolution. It’s a story deeply rooted in this historic ground. This is Leith Links. This is the home of golf.
