Ever wondered where Victoria’s first gold discovery took place? Welcome to Warrandyte District. It is more than just a suburb. It’s a living museum of Australian history.

Warrandyte was once a quiet village. It boomed during the gold rush of the 1850s. Today, it is an outer suburb of Melbourne. It sits nestled on the Yarra River. The Warrandyte State Park surrounds it.

The name Warrandyte has an interesting origin. Some say it comes from the Wurundjeri word ‘warin’. Warin means wombat. Other sources suggest it meant ‘to throw at a target’. This comes from ‘warren’ meaning ‘to throw’. ‘Dyte’ means the object being aimed at.

Gold was first discovered here in 1851. Louis Michel found it on Anderson’s Creek. This was the first gold strike in Victoria. It was the first goldfield in the Port Phillip District. Relics of gold mining are still scattered throughout the park.

Take a walk through Warrandyte. Start with the Relaxing Riverside Ramble. This easy walk begins in Stiggant Park. It follows the Yarra River. You’ll pass the site of the old Warrandyte Punt. It operated from 1856 to 1863. The walk continues to The Island and the Stonehouse Cafe.

Along the way, you’ll see the old Wine Saloon. It is at the Yarra Street roundabout. Pass the Warrandyte War Memorial. The Mechanics Institute dates back to 1928. There’s also a historic bakery from the 1880s. Don’t miss the Warrandyte Federation Playspace. It was inspired by the town’s gold mining history.

Listen to the sound post next to the miner’s hut. It has great sound effects. Hear the story of Taffy. He was a local who never finished rebuilding his home. The walk ends past the Grand Hotel built in 1896 and the Old Post Office Museum.

The Post Office Museum is located at 111 Yarra Street. It has a collection of photos and items. They relate to gold, art, indigenous history, and social history. It’s open on weekends and public holidays.

Explore the Built on Gold Historic Town Walk. It covers much of the Relaxing Riverside Ramble. It starts near the Warrandyte Bridge. Here, there was once an old gold crusher. The timber footings are still visible in the river.

Discover the Building the Warrandyte Style Historic Architectural Walk. After a bushfire in 1939, two women rebuilt the town. Alexa Goyder and Myrtle Houston used second-hand materials. They created a unique style. Architect Robin Boyd called it the “Warrandyte Style” in 1952. It features rubble stone, adobe blocks, and vertical boarded walls.

Explore Warrandyte State Park. See the Pound Bend Tunnel. In 1870, the Evelyn Tunnelling and Mining Company diverted the Yarra River. They dug through 145 metres of rock. This exposed five kilometres of the old river bed for gold mining.

Hike the Gold Heritage Walk. It departs from the Whipstick Gully Car Park. Visit the Victory Mine. It produced 1870 ounces of gold between 1896 and 1899. See the old mine shafts at Fourth Hill Summit.

Warrandyte has a rich artistic history. It attracted artists like Clara Southern and Frederick McCubbin. Penleigh Boyd, Robin Boyd’s father, lived here in 1914.

Warrandyte’s story is etched in its buildings and landscape. From gold rush beginnings to artistic reinvention. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It is a testament to the resilience and creativity of its people.
