Envision a kampong in the sky. That’s Skyville@Dawson. It stands as a testament to innovative public housing. This isn’t just about providing homes. It’s about cultivating community. It’s about sustainability.

Skyville@Dawson comprises three interconnected blocks. Each block features vertically stacked “sky villages”. Each village houses eighty apartments. A naturally ventilated community terrace and garden anchors each one. This design fosters interaction among neighbors. It breaks down the scale of a high-rise.

Designed by WOHA Architects, Skyville@Dawson reflects three core themes. Community, variety, and sustainability are key. The development offers diverse unit types. Flexible layouts cater to various lifestyles. Column-free spaces eliminate waste. They accommodate diverse family sizes. Home offices and loft living are possible.

Consider the sustainable design features. Precast concrete forms the structure. Walls integrate vertical and horizontal sunbreakers. Windows feature overhangs. Mid-height top-hung panels direct breezes. They allow windows to remain open during monsoon season. Openings on all sides bring in light and air. Air-conditioning becomes unnecessary. Common areas enjoy natural ventilation and light. The project boasts over 3.3 hectares of public gardens. It achieves a 100 percent green plot ratio.

Imagine strolling through the communal areas. A plaza along a public linear park offers conveniences. Supermarkets, coffee shops, and retail spaces are readily available. Community ‘living’ rooms at ground level overlook a landscaped park. Enormous raintrees dot the landscape. Community pavilions host weddings and funerals. Play and fitness areas abound. Courts and lawns surround a 150-meter-long bioswale. The rooftop park features a 400-meter jogging track. Pavilions support a photovoltaic array. This array powers the common lighting.

WOHA’s design intertwines local context with contemporary architecture. Environmental principles are fundamental. They weave landscape and community space through porous structures.

Skyville @ Dawson envisions a new typology. It provides high-density urban public housing. The architects break down the scale of the high-rise block. They create meaningful communal spaces. These spaces recall the traditional kampong.

Horizontal planes with greenery create spacious environments. These coincide with the heights of Singapore’s first public housing. This brings the void deck to higher levels.

Various communal spaces enhance the environment. Carefully curated ‘living’ rooms and sky gardens foster a human scale. A repetition of simple geometry creates diversity. Visual connectivity and orientation are key.

SkyVille @ Dawson represents a new peak of design quality. Architects face the challenge of creating high-density estates. They must retain a sense of community. WOHA has demonstrated that it is possible.

The arrangement of stacked ‘sky villages’ humanizes the towers. Community terraces and gardens enhance the sense of neighborhood. Beautifully detailed facilities serve all residents. They are located at ground and roof levels.

The environmental design is sophisticated. It synthesizes contemporary aesthetics. It uses construction and materials technology. A deep understanding of tropical conditions is evident. It exploits light, sun, and breeze. It mitigates overheating and monsoon conditions.

The height of the blocks is celebrated. Generous landscaping means formal family occasions can be conducted. Day-to-day activities can occur here.

SkyVille @ Dawson is a residential and architectural landmark. It is simultaneously large and small in scale. It is intimate and public. It is generous and economical. It is protective and inviting.

Consider that each home is part of a sky village. There are 80 homes that share a naturally ventilated community terrace. Each tower has four vertically stacked sky villages. The three towers are linked horizontally. Despite 960 homes, there is not a single internal corridor. Public space is distributed throughout. The entire roof is a public park.

The project uses passive means. It avoids energy-intensive solutions. Every unit is naturally ventilated. Every room has windows. The design is fully precast. This avoids on-site waste. This makes construction efficient. The external covered spaces are innovative. These social and community spaces ensure that high-rise projects do not cause alienation. Instead, they become vibrant living communities. Skyville@Dawson stands as a testament to this vision.
