In 1902, the Ireland Road Domain, nestled near Panmure township, began its transformation into what we now know as Bill McKinlay Park. Early on, this two-hectare plot hosted a variety of activities. Sports days, rodeos, and carnivals brought the community together. A small pavilion served as the first clubrooms for the Mt Wellington Association Football Club. A pivotal moment in Bill McKinlay Park’s history arrived in 1954. The Domain Board, dissatisfied with the local rugby club, granted exclusive use of the domain to Mt Wellington AFC. This decision solidified the park’s connection to football. The club flourished, necessitating new facilities. Construction took place in stages, culminating in the completion of the main clubrooms in 1968. Tragedy struck in 1976 with the passing of Bill and Joe McKinlay, two dedicated brothers who served the club tirelessly. In honor of Bill’s commitment to the sport, the Ireland Road Domain was renamed Bill McKinlay Park. The park continued to be a hub for football. The playing field, maintained by the club, eventually succumbed to overuse. By 2010, after heavy rains, the field was unusable. A group of dedicated individuals formed the Mt Wellington Stadium Charitable Trust. They envisioned a regional mini-stadium with an all-weather pitch. After years of tireless work, their efforts paid off. A grant was secured in 2010, enabling the installation of the synthetic turf we see today. Bill McKinlay Park holds a special place in football history. In 1980, over 5,000 spectators witnessed New Zealand’s stunning 4-0 victory over Mexico, a moment that fueled dreams of a World Cup appearance. Through the 70s and 80s, the park hosted countless matches, drawing fans to support Mt Wellington AFC, one of the country’s strongest clubs. Today, Bill McKinlay Park offers a state-of-the-art synthetic field suitable for both day and night use, clubrooms that can accommodate up to 120 people, and even catering services. It stands as a testament to the dedication and vision of those who transformed a simple domain into a vibrant sporting center.
