In 1811, a grand edifice began to rise on Charlotte Square. It wasn’t an archive then, but St. George’s Church. West Register House, as we know it today, stands as a testament to transformation. This imposing structure, with its iconic green dome, started its life serving a different purpose altogether. Designed by Robert Reid, after a more elaborate plan by Robert Adam, it was intended as a spiritual hub for the western New Town. The church opened its doors in 1814, the final cost nearly double the initial estimate, reaching a staggering £33,000. Over the years, St. George’s played a vital role in Edinburgh’s religious life. It witnessed the ministries of prominent evangelicals like Andrew Mitchell Thomson and Robert Smith Candlish. It fostered a rich musical tradition, boasting renowned choirmasters and organists, including Alexander Mackenzie. But time, as it often does, brought change. By the mid-20th century, the church faced severe structural damage. The congregation merged with St. Andrew’s on George Street in 1964. The building embarked on a new chapter in its life. Between 1964 and 1970, the church underwent a dramatic conversion. Architect Robert Saddler transformed the interior into a modern archive, creating five storeys and a two-storey entrance hall. The grand sanctuary, once shaped like a Greek cross, was replaced with functional spaces designed to house Scotland’s precious historical records. Today, West Register House is a vital part of the National Records of Scotland. It holds countless documents, safeguarding the nation’s history. The prominent green dome, once a symbol of religious devotion, now watches over a treasure trove of historical data. While not open to the public, its presence on Charlotte Square serves as a reminder of Edinburgh’s rich and evolving story. The building stands strong, a symbol of adaptation and resilience, continuing to serve the community in a new and essential way.
