Was it fate? Or was it simply good fortune that brought two distinct schools together to form the esteemed Claremont Fan Court School?
Claremont Fan Court School stands as a testament to the power of unity. It offers education to pupils aged 2 to 18. This co-educational private day school resides just outside Esher in Surrey. It lies sixteen miles from London. The school occupies the grounds of the historic Claremont Estate.
Let’s step back in time to trace the origins of this remarkable institution. The Claremont Estate boasts a rich history dating back to 1708. Sir John Vanbrugh built the first house here. It was known as Vanbrugh House. In 1714, the Earl of Clare acquired the estate. This is where the name Claremont comes from.
Over the years, numerous notable figures resided here. Lord Clive of India called it home. Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold also lived here. Even Queen Victoria and King Louis Philippe graced the estate with their presence. The grounds themselves bear the mark of renowned architects. Vanbrugh, Capability Brown and William Kent sculpted the landscape.
In 1922, a new chapter began. A school for girls emerged at Mrs Packers’ house. She later became the first principal of Claremont School. The school expanded and moved to Clear View in Norwood in 1923. In 1931, Claremont acquired 33 acres of the Claremont estate. By 1936, Claremont School reached its full capacity. It housed 85 pupils.
During World War II, the school relocated to Llandrindod Wells in Wales. Claremont became home to the Hawker Aircraft company. Sydney Camm’s design team developed the Hawker Tempest fighter here.
After the war, in 1946, the school returned to the Claremont Estate. The school purchased White Cottage in 1949. By 1955, the stables transformed into a junior school. The student body grew to 200, with half as boarders. By 1970, the school added a gymnasium, art rooms and a music block.
Meanwhile, another school was taking shape. In 1932, a preparatory school for boys was founded in Banstead. It was named Fan Court School. The school moved to Fan Court, Chertsey, in 1934.
Initially, only five pupils attended. They came from South Africa, the USA and England. By 1956, the number rose to 85. The school magazine was named Vox Leonis. The Old Boys’ Club and Friends of Fan Court were established. Fan Court Day celebrated the school’s community annually.
During World War II, evacuation to Canada or the Bahamas was considered. However, it never occurred. The school planted a tree in 1945 to mark the war’s end.
In 1967, Fan Court opened a junior school for both boys and girls. This strengthened the bond between Fan Court and Claremont School. Claremont financially supported Fan Court’s swimming pool in 1955. Joint parties began in 1964.
The momentous year arrived in 1978. Claremont School and Fan Court School joined forces. They became Claremont Fan Court School. The school became co-educational. It served pupils aged 2 to 18.
The 1980s saw the construction of the Joyce Grenfell Centre. It housed a music school, theatre and computer suite. A new junior school and principal’s house were built. White Cottage became the Sixth Form centre in the 1990s. A new sports hall was also added.
In 2019, the Sir Sydney Camm science and technology building opened. In 2022, the school expanded by purchasing West Acre.
Claremont Fan Court School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1972. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited the Mansion in 1979.
Today, Claremont Fan Court School thrives. Pupils join one of six houses: Longcross, Norwood, Radnor, Esher, Stanmore or Banstead. These houses foster camaraderie and friendly competition.
Claremont Fan Court School’s motto is “Be Strong in Understanding.” The school crest unites a lion and a torch. The school song is titled “Nisi Dominus Frustra”.
Although founded by Christian Scientists, the school welcomes pupils of all faiths. Religious education follows the National Curriculum.
Numerous notable individuals have passed through its halls. These include Joyce Grenfell, James Hamilton and Michaela Strachan.
