High atop a stone cliff, Paróquia Bom Jesus da Penha stands proudly. It welcomes all. This iconic church, a beacon of faith, has a history spanning centuries.

Paróquia Bom Jesus da Penha history began in 1635. Captain Baltazar de Abreu Cardoso owned the land. One day, a serpent attacked him as he explored his property. In desperation, he called upon Our Lady for help. Miraculously, a lizard appeared and defeated the snake.

Grateful for his salvation, Captain Baltazar built a small chapel. It was a humble tribute to Our Lady. He placed an image of his protector within its walls. Baltazar made it a habit to visit the chapel. He prayed to Our Lady of Penha regularly. His relatives and friends soon joined him. They ascended the cliff as a sign of faith. Over time, devotion grew. The captain donated his land to the worship of the saint.

In 1817, a couple prayed to Our Lady. They wanted a child. Maria Barbosa promised to carve steps into the cliff. This would make access to the church easier. The following year, they had a son. In 1819, the 382 steps were completed. These steps became a defining feature of the church. Pilgrims often climb them on their knees. They fulfill vows and seek blessings.

In 1870, the original chapel was replaced. A grander temple was built. This became a major Catholic sanctuary. On the first Sunday of October, a special celebration occurs. It commemorates the sanctuary and Our Lady of Penha. For over 380 years, stories of faith have drawn people here. They retrace the same path.

In 1900, architect Luiz de Moraes Júnior renovated the facade. He incorporated a neo-Gothic style. The church’s architecture is now considered eclectic. It combines various influences. These include symmetry, towers, and a balconied facade.

In June 2016, Pope Francis elevated the sanctuary. It became the Basilica Menor. This recognized its importance.

Today, Paróquia Bom Jesus da Penha offers breathtaking views. From the church, you can see Christ the Redeemer. You can also view Corcovado, Guanabara Bay, and Galeão International Airport. The church faces the sea, a common feature for coastal churches. The steps lead to the back of the church.

Paróquia Bom Jesus da Penha continues to be a site of pilgrimage. It attracts countless visitors annually. They come to pay homage and admire its unique architecture. Its rich history and stunning location make it a must-see destination. The story of Paróquia Bom Jesus da Penha is one of faith, gratitude, and architectural evolution.
