A small street named after a remarkable woman. That’s Rue Louise Caillol. This unassuming street in Marseille holds a significant piece of the city’s cultural history. It’s more than just a road. It’s a tribute to Louise Caillol a woman who left an indelible mark.

Rue Louise Caillol connects Boulevard Bara and Avenue Paul Dalbret. Its creation wasn’t accidental. It fulfilled a long-standing need. Residents of Chateau Gombert wanted safer passage through their village. Heavy trucks posed a danger especially near the Saint Mathieu school.

The City of Marseille reserved land for the street in the early 1990s. However the project truly gained momentum in 2008. The newly created metropolis allocated the necessary budget. The street finally opened in early 2019.

Naming the street was a significant event. The Roudelet Felibren and the neighborhood’s Committee of Interest played a crucial role. They sought a name reflecting the village’s history. Many remembered Louise Caillol fondly nicknamed “Suzon”.

Louise Caillol was President of the Roudelet Felibren from 1958 to 1969. Under her leadership they created the International Folklore Festival of Chateau Gombert. This festival celebrated its 56th edition in 2020.

Her contribution to Chateau Gombert was undeniable. The Roudelet Felibren and the CIQ proposed naming the street in her honor. The Marseille Municipal Council accepted. Rue Louise Caillol became a reality.

The street’s location is fitting. It’s near the Center for Provencal Culture home of the Roudelet Felibren. It directly serves the International Folklore Festival’s theater. The theater is set up each July on the boules court at 17 Avenue Paul Dalbret.

The inauguration of Rue Louise Caillol took place on November 29 2019. The street stands as a lasting monument to a woman who enriched Chateau Gombert’s cultural life. It’s a reminder of her dedication and vision. A small street with a big story. A story worth remembering.
