Think of London’s Marylebone neighborhood. Here stands St Mary’s Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a Grade I listed building with a story etched in its very stones.

St Mary’s Church was completed in 1824. Robert Smirke designed it. He also designed the British Museum’s facade. The church was built as one of the Commissioners’ Churches. These churches celebrated Britain’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo.

St Mary’s has a rounded stone portico. A round tower and a small dome also adorn it. A cross tops the dome. The church cost about £19955. That’s equivalent to about £2220000 today.

Step inside St Mary’s Church. Notice the Greek Revival-style columns. Admire the large square windows. Marvel at the striking ornamentations. The Great Hall features natural oak flooring. This provides a grand setting.

The church has a rich history. Charles John Gardiner and Margaret Farmer married here. Thomas Frognall Dibdin served as a rector. Samuel Augustus Barnett met his future wife Henrietta here.

St Mary’s is known colloquially as “St Mary’s Church London”. It is a central Anglican church. It’s also known for its active evangelical community.

In 2002, the current congregation began meeting here. Revd John Peters leads them. The congregation came from St Paul’s Onslow Square.

St Mary’s has planted many churches. These plants were created in Auckland. Exeter and Jacksonville also have plants. They share friendship and values.
