Once upon a time, Barangay Buting wasn’t just a place. It was named after a woman named Butihin. According to legend, Barangay Buting owes its name to Butihin. She was a young Chinese Mestiza. Butihin was the only daughter of merchant parents. She embodied ideal womanhood. Butihin was beautiful, modest, kind, humble, obedient, and noble. Her reputation spread far and wide. Sadly, Butihin died young. The whole community grieved deeply. She was buried where the chapel of Buting once stood. That chapel built in 1575 is now the stone church of San Guillermo Parish. The name Butihin was shortened to Buting.

Today, Barangay Buting stands as a testament to that legacy. This barangay is more than just a location. It is a religious community. The people here are God-fearing and patriotic. They are environment-friendly and sensitive to the needs of the poor. Barangay Buting strives to be beautiful, clean, and green. It is a place worthy of being called home.

The Buting Barangay Hall plays a crucial role. It serves a community of approximately 18500 residents. They occupy a total land area of 4.2 hectares. That land consists mostly of residential lots. The barangay is divided into eight puroks. These are Aliw, Ausmulo, Bukid, Gitna, Ilaya, Looban, Manggahan 1, and Manggahan 2.

Barangay Buting is strategically located. It lies in the southern part of Pasig City. Makati City borders it to the west. Pateros is to the south. San Joaquin and Kalawaan lie to the east. Sumilang and Santa Rosa are to the north. It is accessible from Taguig and Quezon City via C-5 Road.

Buting Elementary School also has a rich history. It began in 1900. The Philippine Soldiers’ Barracks, later Fort Bonifacio, was being built. The land was once a graveyard. Americans donated it to build the school.

Initially, it was a barrio primary school. It offered classes from Grades I to IV. In 1956, Buting Elementary School offered complete education from Grades I-VI. The first commencement exercise was in 1958. Thirty-six grade six pupils graduated.

Today, Buting Elementary School is an established public school in Pasig. It comprises nine buildings. These include VPE Buildings, Bagong Lipunan Building, and Carucho Building. It also has a gym, canteen, and specialized rooms. These rooms support various student needs.

From its legendary origins to its present-day role, Buting continues to evolve. It remains rooted in its rich history. It is a testament to community, faith, and service.
