Amidst the bustling energy of Leipzig, find a moment of quiet reflection at Apelstein 38. This unassuming obelisk holds a significant piece of history. Apelstein 38 commemorates a pivotal moment during the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. It stands as a testament to the clash of empires. It silently whispers tales of the past. Theodor Apel, a Leipzig citizen and writer, initiated the placement of these stones. He envisioned them as markers, scattered across the battlefields, each narrating a piece of the colossal struggle that reshaped Europe. There are 50 Apelsteine in and around Leipzig. Apelstein 38, located in Leipzig-Heiterblick, specifically commemorates the position of Bernadotte, also known as Carl Johann, Crown Prince of Sweden. The inscription on the obelisk states he commanded 50,000 men during the battle. The reverse side of Apelstein 38 states, “Schlacht bei LEIPZIG am 18. October 1813”. This translates to “Battle of Leipzig on October 18, 1813,” clearly marking the date and location of the conflict. Originally crafted from sandstone, many of the Apelsteine, including Apelstein 38, have been replaced with more durable copies due to weathering and urban development. This ensures their continued presence as historical reminders. The Apelsteine were designed with specific markings. Stones representing coalition forces had pointed tops, an inverted “V,” and the letter “V”. Those representing Napoleonic troops had rounded tops and the letter “N”. Apelstein 38, dedicated to a coalition leader, would have originally borne these pointed markings. As you stand before Apelstein 38, consider the vast scale of the Battle of Leipzig. Imagine the thunder of cannons and the movement of thousands of soldiers across these very fields. Apelstein 38 offers a tangible connection to this world-altering event. It’s a quiet tribute to the individuals who shaped the course of history.
