The Hamiltons of Bothwellhaugh owned Old Woodhouselee Castle. Regent Moray’s actions irrevocably altered its fate. He expelled Lady Hamilton and her child. He left them naked and exposed to the elements. The child tragically died. Lady Hamilton is said to have lost her mind as a result. Her husband James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh and Woodhouselee sought revenge. He assassinated Regent Moray in Linlithgow in 1570. This act of violence forever stained the castle’s history.

Yet it couldn’t withstand the passage of time and human conflict. It was eventually demolished. Its stones were used to build Woodhouselee a building that has since vanished.
