Has Osterley Station always stood as a beacon of modern European architecture? No. A different Osterley Station graced this area back in 1883. That original station, known as Osterley & Spring Grove, resided about 300 meters east from here on Thornbury Road. The year 1934 saw a transformation in Osterley’s transport landscape, with the current Osterley Station gracing Great West Road. This move wasn’t just a whim. It was a strategic choice to align with the newly opened Great West Road in 1925. This new station you see before you, designed by Stanley Heaps, showcases a distinctive style popularized by Charles Holden. Look closely at the brickwork, the reinforced concrete, and the expansive glass panels – hallmarks of Holden’s influence. And what about that intriguing concrete “obelisk” atop the station’s brick tower? Some architectural enthusiasts believe it draws inspiration from Amsterdam’s De Telegraaf Building, a structure Holden studied during his travels. Today, Osterley Station stands as a Grade II listed building, a testament to its architectural significance and a landmark in its own right.
