In 1898, Pützchen was establishing itself as an independent parish. The community decided it needed its own cemetery. The church building association acquired land for this purpose. They even planned a separate section for those of different faiths.
By 1899, a prominent high cross was erected. A hedge was planted to enclose the grounds. The first burials took place here in 1900. Before 1910, a local craftsman installed an entrance gate. However, it was replaced in 1921 with a more durable natural stone structure during the cemetery’s first expansion. A second expansion followed in 1929.
Today, Friedhof Pützchen covers 1.62 hectares. Although it is not under historical preservation status, its history is palpable. Since the 1950s, the cemetery has been owned by the city of Bonn, formerly Beuel.
One unusual feature is the wayside cross near the fence. It dates back to 1871. Its origin is a bit of a mystery. It is unclear if it came from another cemetery or served as a wayside cross. It might even have been a donation cross. The cross bears an inscription naming the donors. It was a mason named Arenz and his wife Kolf.
The entrance to Friedhof Pützchen is striking. Tall bushes line the path leading to a Christ statue. This statue was erected in 1921. It was likely an anonymous gift. The local church provided the foundation and base. The statue stands a few meters from the entrance. Larger bushes partially obscure the view of the cemetery. The path splits before the statue. It guides visitors around the monument and into the Friedhof Pützchen.
Along both sides of this path, plaques commemorate those who fell during the Second World War. Every visitor entering through this gate inevitably passes these memorials. Friedhof Pützchen retains the feel of a classic village cemetery. It features a formal layout. A simple mourning hall stands in the front right section. The site was expanded in the 1980s.
