Hidden within a valley between Epsom Downs and Walton Downs lies Langley Vale. This seemingly quiet village holds a rich history intertwined with horse racing, royalty, and even a touch of wartime intrigue. Langley Vale wasn’t always a village. It began as a medieval farm, mentioned in records as early as 1255. By the 15th century, it seems to have vanished from maps, possibly a casualty of the Black Death. The modern village emerged much later, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, growing gradually as houses filled the valley. Langley Vale has a strong connection to Epsom Downs Racecourse, just a mile to the northeast. In the 1950s, the village boasted 15 training stables, and many residents worked in the racing industry. The village even shares a history with The Warren, a nearby estate once believed to house a hunting lodge for Charles II. While the royal connection remains unproven, The Warren’s history as a horse racing and training center is well documented. It changed hands several times, eventually becoming part of United Racecourses (Holdings) Ltd. in 1907. Langley Vale also played a role during the First World War. The nearby area was used for army training, complete with trenches, a rifle range, and even a gas training school. Today, Langley Vale Wood stands as a living memorial to this era. With its mix of ancient woodland and new plantings, it commemorates the sacrifices made during the war. Sculptures like “The Regiment of Trees” and “Witness” add to the wood’s poignant atmosphere. So, as you stand in Langley Vale, remember you’re standing on layers of history. From medieval farms to bustling racing stables, wartime training grounds to a peaceful memorial wood, Langley Vale has seen it all.
