Once upon a time, Orono was just a fragment of Excelsior Township. But everything changed in 1889. Residents sought and received permission to form their own independent town. This marked the beginning of Orono as we know it.
Orono got its unique name from Orono in Maine. Early resident George A. Brackett hailed from there. He brought the name and a piece of his history to this new Minnesota town. Today, Orono is proudly known as the “Lakeshore City.” The motto reflects its prime location on the north shore of Lake Minnetonka.
In 1955, Orono took another significant step. It officially became a city. This incorporation solidified its place as a distinct municipality in Hennepin County.
Orono is not just a place with a past. It is also a vibrant community with a present. As of the 2020 census, 8,315 people called Orono home. This population contributes to the city’s unique character.
Orono’s geography is defined by its waters. Of its total area of 25.15 square miles, 9.17 square miles are water. This abundance of water shapes the landscape and lifestyle. U.S. Highway 12 is a key route connecting Orono to the wider region.
Orono is known for its affluence. It consistently ranks as one of the wealthiest cities in Minnesota. The city boasts beautiful homes, stunning views, and a tight-knit community.
Education is a priority in Orono. Residents attend the Orono Public School District. The district includes elementary, intermediate, middle, and high schools. These schools serve not only Orono but also surrounding areas. Orono High School was named the number one public high school in Minnesota in 2023.
Orono offers a variety of activities. Residents and visitors enjoy trails, parks, and Lake Minnetonka. The Orono Public Golf Course is a local favorite. Founded in 1924, it was the first public course in the state with grass greens.
Orono is also home to notable people. From early businessman George A. Brackett to Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa. Each has left their mark on the city. Bruce Dayton, the retail executive behind Target Corporation, also called Orono home.
Orono faced a unique challenge in 2023. The city was found in contempt of court. This stemmed from a dispute with the Long Lake Fire Department. The court’s order highlighted the complexities of local governance.
Today, Orono stands as a blend of history and progress. From its roots as part of Excelsior Township to its status as an affluent city. Orono continues to evolve. It remains a place of community, natural beauty, and unique stories.
