Deep within Aarhus Municipality, nestled amidst the gentle slopes and vibrant foliage, lies the enchanting Lillering Forest. A quiet haven, Lillering offers a glimpse into a world teeming with life. Lillering Forest covers approximately 50 hectares. This makes it a relatively small forest, but don’t let its size fool you. It is part of a larger protected Natura 2000 area, encompassing Tåstrup Bog, Tåstrup Lake, and Stjær Forest. Lillering Forest itself is predominantly beech and European ash, creating a dense canopy overhead. Lillering Forest boasts a remarkable array of biodiversity. Early records from 1877 describe its unique botanical significance. Today, around 400 vascular plants have been documented here, representing a third of all Danish plant species! Look closely and you may find hornbeam, a tree more common further south, thriving in Lillering. Other noteworthy plants include dead-nettles, white butterbur, bitter-cress, and the multicolored viola. The forest floor might reveal several orchid species, such as the broad-leaved helleborine and the greater butterfly-orchid, if you’re lucky. Lillering Forest isn’t just a paradise for plants. It’s a haven for rare insects and birds. Keep an eye out for the geometer moths, whose existence is tied to the buckthorns found in the forest and the nearby Tåstrup Bog. A small, rare owl, known for its fondness for mouse-ear chickweed, has also been spotted in the area. The Bøgæbakke Bæk, a stream winding its way through the landscape, supports a thriving population of the mayfly siphlonurus aestivalis.
