Unusually tall for its size Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church’s tower stands proudly. It’s a sight that has graced the landscape south of Bonnyrigg for over two centuries. This isn’t just any church. This is a testament to faith perseverance and architectural ingenuity.
Built between 1817 and 1820 by R & R Dickson the church replaced an older structure. Its design is attributed to Richard Crichton although his untimely death meant his apprentices completed the work. The church’s distinctive tower wasn’t merely an aesthetic choice. Legend says it was deliberately designed tall enough to be visible from Arniston the residence of the Lord Chief Baron.
Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the unity of two parishes. In 1975 the parishes of Cockpen and Carrington merged. The former Carrington church a 1711 structure now serves as an office. Before 1975 Carrington was linked with Temple Parish Church another church that is now closed.
The church’s history extends far beyond its current building. Records mention a Cockpen parish church as early as 1176 AD. It was even consecrated by David de Bernham Bishop of St Andrews in 1242. The current church a mile north of the original site opened in 1820. Its design was so striking that it inspired a larger version at Kilconquhar Parish Church in Fife.
Step inside and you’ll find a Wadsworth pipe organ dating from 1888. It’s a beautiful instrument played every Sunday at services and during weddings and funerals. Adding a unique charm to this already captivating church is a waistcoat once belonging to the legendary Laird of Cockpen. It resides in the church’s vestibule a quirky reminder of the area’s rich history.
Today Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church continues its role as a spiritual heart of the community.
