But this park holds a secret history, a time when it was known as “The Lily Gardens.” Imagine, back in 1886, developers envisioned a picturesque park. They created two impressive basins specifically for water lilies, giving the park its unique charm and name. In 1889, the City of Chicago annexed the area, including Lily Gardens Park. It wasn’t until 1957 that the park became part of the Chicago Park District system. Over time, maintaining those beautiful lily ponds proved challenging. Eventually, the difficult decision was made: the lily ponds were replaced. A playground now stands in their place, offering joy and laughter to a new generation. Though the lilies are gone, their legacy lives on in the park’s name, a reminder of its elegant past.
