Did you know that the Île des Impressionnistes wasn’t always a single island? It is actually made up of several natural islands. Let’s explore this timeless place. It inspired some of the greatest Impressionist painters.

The Île des Impressionnistes is located in Chatou. It enchanted famous artists with its light, landscapes, and festive atmosphere. Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Berthe Morisot found inspiration here. Even Camille Pissarro was captivated by this island.

In the late 18th century, a dyke was built. It connected the large island of Hameau Fournaise to the island of Chiard. This strengthened the current. It improved the efficiency of the Machine de Marly. The machine originally supplied water to the Château de Versailles. Another dyke joins the island of Chatou to the island of Chaussée de Croissy.

Alphonse Fournaise built boats in Chatou. His wife opened the iconic Maison Fournaise. It became a great success. The joyous society of the 19th century escaped social expectations here. Maupassant and Flaubert socialized with beautiful women.

Painters revelled in the jovial atmosphere. They created art without counting the cost. Renoir painted about thirty pictures here. One of them is the famous “Déjeuner des canotiers”. Other artists like Monet, Manet, and Degas also frequented this haven.

The Île des Impressionnistes retains a special atmosphere. The Fournaise restaurant still stands with its red shutters. Epic caricatures adorn its walls. This former guinguette once faced ruin. Now, it is listed as a historic monument.

The terrace overlooks the Seine. It served as the setting for Renoir’s “Déjeuner des canotiers”. Renoir painted thirty canvases. They illustrate boating and relaxation on the Seine. The Fournaise family orchestrated these joyous days. Renoir also painted “Portrait d’Alphonsine”. She was the daughter of Alphonse Fournaise. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris displays this painting. Frescoes by caricaturist clients remain intact. They are on the walls of the upstairs room. These testify to the era’s current events.

The Maison Fournaise restaurant recently reopened after renovations. It offers traditional French cuisine. The new chef, Stéphane d’Aboville, revisits classic dishes.

Visit the Musée Fournaise to learn more. It features an immersive exhibit honoring Auguste Renoir. You can experience boating on the Seine. The Sequana association offers afternoon excursions.

Today, the Île des Impressionnistes hosts events throughout the year. The Lumières Impressionnistes Festival takes place in September. It features dance, light shows, and artistic performances. These celebrate the Impressionists. The Elektric Park Festival attracts electro music fans. The Foire de Chatou showcases antiques in spring and autumn.
